Starting on Wednesday, August 17 at 7 p.m. British Standard Time (2 p.m. EDT, 11 a.m. PDT), gamers will once again prove that gaming can offer more than fun. Four video game fans will play a mashup of retro, indie and blockbuster games non-stop for 48 hours, to raise money for a very good cause: the Cambridge Red Balloon Centre.
Anyone can watch the Mashup Marathon; it will be available live on Ustream. The four players, FrazerJC, Rainlasher, eXec64 and Pedgie, will provide commentary as they play and viewers can donate to the cause as well as win prizes.
The games to be played in the marathon are all either PC or original PlayStation games. They include Croc Legend of the Gobbos, Trine, Portal 2, Spyro 2, VVVVVV, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, Super Meat Boy, Rayman 2: The Great Escape, and Limbo.
Prizes for the viewers and those who donate are: four copies of Limbo on Steam, courtesy of PlayDead Games; 2 copies of Terraria on Steam; Beat Hazard Complete on Steam; Premium Minecraft; and EDGE on Steam, courtesy of Two Tribes Games.
Red Balloon Learning Centres provide refuge for children and teenagers who have been bullied to the point that they find it difficult and painful to go to school in the U.K. The centers provide a safe environment with a full-time education and therapeutic support so that they can eventually move on to school, college or work. The marathon is designed to raise funds so that the Cambridge Red Balloon Centre can help as many children as possible.
Those who want to help can donate to the cause. For additional information on this event, visit www.justgiving.com/mashupmarathons or gamemarathons.com/2011/08/mashup-marathon-august-17.
